Madison County, Arkansas, may be known for its scenic beauty and rural, rustic charm, but beneath the surface, a series of unsolved cases is raising serious questions about justice--or the lack thereof--in this tight-knit community.
Three cases, in particular, demand immediate answers: the disappearance of Jason Lierl, the brutal murder of Billie Jean Phillips, and the tragic homicide of Taylor Barksdale. Each case is steeped in mystery, alleged ties to drug-related activities, and a frustrating lack of resolution.
But now, there’s a new voice calling attention to these cases--one that’s been stirring the pot in the best possible way.
Recently, author and investigative advocate LaDonna Humphrey made a post on her author Facebook page that caught my attention. If you don’t know LaDonna, she’s been instrumental in shedding light on cold cases, including the infamous murder of Melissa Witt in Fort Smith. Now, it seems, she’s turning her focus toward the dark underbelly of Madison County--and for good reason.
Humphrey’s post raised critical questions about the lack of movement in these cases. She’s calling out the silence, the failures, and the overall dysfunction that seem to plague these investigations. And let me tell you something: She’s not wrong.
How is it that these cases remain unsolved? How many times can families be brushed aside before someone finally steps up and demands action?

In January 2022, Jason Lierl was in Madison County visiting friends. Then, he was gone. His car was later found abandoned, but Jason himself was nowhere to be found.
Despite searches, pleas from his loved ones, and supposed investigations, there have been no major developments in over two years.
How does a man simply disappear in a county where everybody seems to know everybody? Somebody out there knows what happened to Jason Lierl, and it’s time they start talking.

Billie Jean Phillips was murdered in Madison County in 1994. An arrest was eventually made, but questions about the case still linger. Why hasn’t justice been fully served? What information is still being kept under wraps?
For three decades, Billie Jean’s name has been whispered through the hills and hollers of Madison County, but whispers don’t solve murders. Where is the full closure for Billie Jean’s family?
Most recently, Taylor Barksdale, a 30-year-old woman from Huntsville, went missing in 2024. Her remains were found months later, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Yet, despite this being a fresh case, it’s already falling into the same void as the others—another name added to the list of unsolved tragedies in Madison County.
Where is the urgency? Where is the accountability?
Let’s talk facts: When cases remain unsolved for this long, it’s not just a lack of evidence--it’s often a lack of effort. Whether it’s due to law enforcement roadblocks, corruption, or just plain apathy, these cases are not getting the attention they deserve.
People in Madison County—--and beyond--should be demanding answers. The families of Jason Lierl, Billie Jean Phillips, and Taylor Barksdale deserve more than empty words and stalled investigations.
And now, with LaDonna Humphrey on the case, I’d be willing to bet things are about to heat up. If history tells us anything, it’s that she doesn’t let go once she gets involved. And Today in Fort Smith is not lacking in bulldog tenacity when it comes to investigating nd exposing these types of cases in our midst.
So, I’ll ask again: What the hell is going on over in Madison County? And more importantl--who’s finally going to do something about it?
If you have information, now is the time to come forward. Call authorities, call the media, heel, call me at 479-461-0126--but don’t stay silent.
These cases deserve justice, and silence only protects the guilty.
