TIFS Investigates: Tarot card reading scams: Preying on hope in cold cases

By Sienna Snider, True Crime Writer, Today in Fort Smith

In the world of true crime, the pursuit of answers often leads desperate families and investigators down unconventional paths. One such path that has seen a recent surge in interest is the use of tarot card readings. While some view tarot as a harmless hobby or spiritual practice, a troubling trend has emerged in which fraudulent tarot readers prey on the desperation of those seeking answers to unsolved cold cases.

Tarot card reading scams have become a growing concern, particularly for families desperate for closure in unsolved cases. Promising insight into the whereabouts of missing loved ones or the identity of unknown killers, these so-called "psychic detectives" lure victims with false hope, only to deliver vague or misleading information in exchange for hefty fees.

The Rise of Tarot Scams in Cold Cases

The allure of tarot cards lies in their mystique and the belief that they can provide glimpses into the unknown. For families and friends of victims whose cases have gone cold, the promise of a breakthrough is often too enticing to pass up. Unfortunately, this hope can make them easy targets for scammers who exploit their vulnerability for financial gain.

One local case illustrates how tarot scams can exploit the emotions of the grieving. After years of waiting for new leads, the family of a missing woman from Fort Smith turned to a tarot card reader who claimed to have a "gift" for locating missing persons. Promising new clues, the reader charged the family thousands of dollars over several months, offering nothing more than ambiguous statements that led them on wild goose chases across the state.

It wasn’t until a local detective intervened that the family realized they had been swindled.

"They played on our desperation," said a family member who wished to remain anonymous. "We just wanted answers, and they gave us false hope. We thought we were finally going to find her, but it was all a scam."

The Tactics of Scammers

These scams often begin innocuously enough, with tarot readers presenting themselves as having genuine psychic abilities. Many advertise their services on social media or local community boards, using testimonials and vague claims to establish credibility.

Once they’ve gained the trust of their victims, the scam artists begin a careful game of manipulation, offering just enough information to keep their clients hooked while demanding increasingly large payments.

The methods they use are often strikingly similar to those employed by so-called "psychic detectives." By using cold reading techniques—where the reader makes broad, general statements that can apply to anyone—tarot scammers can create the illusion that they have knowledge of a case.

Statements like "I see a body of water" or "someone close to the victim knows what happened" can feel like revelations to grieving families but, in reality, offer no concrete information.

Impact on Cold Case Investigations

Aside from the financial toll, tarot scams can have a significant impact on legitimate investigations into cold cases. False leads generated by these readings can waste valuable time and resources for law enforcement, diverting attention away from credible evidence and tips.

In some cases, families who have been scammed become distrustful of all outside help, making it harder for investigators to engage them in future investigations.

Detective Mark Rogers, who has worked several cold cases in the Fort Smith area, warns that while it’s natural for families to seek out all avenues for answers, they must be cautious about who they trust.

"These scammers are skilled at what they do," Rogers said. "They give just enough to make people believe they have some special insight, but it’s all smoke and mirrors. We advise anyone seeking help with a cold case to rely on professional investigators and verified information."

Staying Vigilant Against Scams

So, how can families protect themselves from falling victim to these scams? Experts suggest several steps, including:

  • Verify Credentials: Legitimate psychics or spiritual advisors will have a track record and can provide references. Be wary of anyone who cannot produce verifiable credentials or who operates solely online without any physical presence.

  • Avoid Upfront Payments: Be cautious of anyone asking for large sums of money upfront or requiring continuous payments for "ongoing services." Reputable professionals usually charge reasonable rates and do not demand exorbitant fees.

  • Seek Second Opinions: If a tarot reader or psychic makes a claim about a cold case, cross-reference that information with law enforcement or other credible sources. Do not act on the advice of a tarot reading alone.

  • Rely on Law Enforcement and Advocacy Groups: Organizations dedicated to solving cold cases can provide support and resources. Engage with them instead of relying on unverified sources.

The Hope for Justice

While the temptation to explore every possible avenue in a cold case is understandable, it is crucial for families and communities to remain vigilant against those who would exploit their grief for profit. As we continue to seek justice for the victims of unsolved crimes, we must ensure that our efforts are guided by facts and genuine expertise rather than the false promises of scammers.

As a true crime writer committed to uncovering the truth, I urge anyone considering using alternative methods in their quest for answers to exercise caution and seek out legitimate resources. Together, we can work to bring closure to those who have suffered and ensure that justice prevails.
