A 39-year-old Greenwood man died Thursday morning after being struck while riding a gas-powered scooter in a collision at the intersection of Towson Avenue and Phoenix Avenue, according to the Fort Smith Police Department.

Matthew Funk was identified as the victim. A Fort Smith Police Department news release confirmed he died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Funk was operating the gas-powered scooter when he was struck head-on by another vehicle. The other driver was arrested on unrelated warrants.

Police have released no further details on the circumstances of the collision, the identity of the other driver, vehicle descriptions, or any potential charges related to the crash itself. The investigation remains active, and officials indicated additional information may be released when appropriate.

As of Thursday evening, no corresponding fatal crash summary had been posted by the Arkansas State Police, which is consistent with the incident falling under Fort Smith Police jurisdiction rather than a state highway investigation.

The intersection of Towson Avenue (U.S. 71B) and Phoenix Avenue is a busy corridor on the south side of Fort Smith.
