Writer: Dennis McCaslinDennis McCaslin

A two car collision earlier in the week on US Highway 71 in Scott County took the life of a 32-year-old woman and sent an 83-year-old to an area hospital according to information that was provided Friday by the Arkansas State Police.

Diane Michelle Grewe of Waldron was northbound on US in a 2016 Chevrolet near the intersection of State Highway 272 at just after 2:30 pm on Friday when she crossed the centerline and stuck another southbound 2016 Chevrolet driven by Frieda Mae Pierce, also of Waldron.

The impact caused the Grewe vehicle to run off left side of the roadway and strike a culvert before coming to rest. The Pierce car spun counterclockwise before finally coming to rest partially blocking the southbound lane of the highway.

Both of the injured were taken to Mercy Fort Smith where Grewe was pronounced dead.

Trooper Ronald Elkins worked the accident and noted clear weather conditions and dry pavement at the time of the accident. Grewe's death represents the 247th fatality in Arkansas for 2022.
