Unwillingness to stay current on state sex offender registry puts 51-year-old behind bars in Sequoyah County

A 51-year-old Muskogee County sex offender who was convicted and has been a nuisance to law enforcement for nearly 20 years is back in the spotlight following his arrest in Sequoyah County earlier today for not registering as a sex offender.

According to information from the SCSO, William Lee Cooper was arrested and booked into the Sequoyah County Detention Center at 1:11 a.m. this morning.

According to the State Sex Offender Registry, Cooper's last listed and verified address was in Fort Gibson.

Cooper was arrested in 2018 for not keeping up his registration on the state registry. Cooper was first convicted in 2006 forlewd molestation. At that point, his apprehension also led to a revocation, and he received a 4-year term.

He was reportedly freed after serving only a portion of that sentence. He was arrested once more in 2021 for armed robbery with a weapon while residing in Muskogee, but the charge was dropped since he belonged to a native American tribe and the US government lacked jurisdiction at the time.

The Oklahoma State Crime Network shows Cooper has also been involved in two divorces and an order of protection by a third pary outside of those marriages.

He has been residing in Sallisaw, according to information from his booking in Sequoyah County.
