Tuesday accident south of Rogers exit on I540 claims 33-year-old Fort Smith man

Officials with the Arkansas State Police say a 32-year-old Fort Smith man died Tuesday as the result of a mid-day, one-vehicle accident on Interstate 540 just south of the Rogers Avenue exit.


An ASP preliminary report identified the victim as Darris L. Hopkins.


Hopkins was traveling southbound on I540 in the inside lane when the 2013 Nissan he was driving struck a concrete barrier. The vehicle then traveled back across the traffic lanes, exiting the roadway to the right, before striking an embankment and rolling over.


The vehicle came to rest on its side facing west, according to the report.


Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sebastian County Coroner's Office.


Sr. Corporal Michael R. Springer worked he accident for the state police and noted clear conditions and normal pavement at the time of the crash, which occurred at 11:21 am on Tuesday.


The death was the 351st Arkansas roadway fatality for 2021.
