Chance Duncan, a Russellville High School science teacher, was absent from his classroom on Monday, September 15, 2025, despite no official announcement from the Russellville School District.
Sources report a special school board meeting is set for September 25, potentially to address Duncan’s employment status following his controversial X post and public apology tied to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk
.Kirk, the 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. The shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, surrendered on September 12, with his first court appearance scheduled for September 16.

The killing has sparked national debates on political violence and free speech, with President Trump ordering flags at half-staff and planning to award Kirk a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Duncan, a 17-year veteran teacher known for his STEM mentorship and endangered species conservation, posted a Clarence Darrow quote on X hours after Kirk’s death: “I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.” The post, seen as mocking Kirk’s death, drew widespread outrage.
Duncan’s 300-word apology on September 14 expressed deep remorse, but reactions remain divided, with some praising his accountability and others demanding his dismissal.
The Russellville School District, silent since confirming an investigation last week, faces mounting pressure from parents and critics over its inaction. Duncan’s absence and the upcoming board meeting suggest a resolution may be near.
This case mirrors a national trend, with over a dozen educators disciplined for similar posts about Kirk’s death.
Updates on the district’s decision, Robinson’s hearing, and broader implications will follow on Today in Fort Smith.
