TIFS Investigates: New correspondent will be tackling missing persons, cold cases for Today in Fort Smith

By Sienna Snider, Today in Fort Smith

Fort Smith, AR – In the heart of America, the state of Arkansas grapples with a troubling and often overlooked crisis: the plight of missing adults. Each year, countless individuals vanish, leaving behind families desperate for answers and communities shaken by their absence. As a new true crime writer for Today in Fort Smith, I aim to shed light on this pressing issue and explore the stories behind the statistics.

The Stark Reality

When we think of missing persons, our minds often turn to children. However, adults make up a significant portion of these cases, and their disappearances are no less alarming. In Arkansas, hundreds of adults are reported missing each year. Some are found quickly, while others remain lost, their fates unknown.

The Faces of the Missing

Lori Murchison

The stories of these missing adults are diverse, yet each one is filled with heartbreak and mystery. Take, for example, the case of Lori Murchison-Dunbar.  Lori was last seen at approximately 5:40 a.m. in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on September 2, 1995. She was at the corner of Parker Street and South 6th Street near the Continental Motel.

Prior to her disappearance, she and her boyfriend were arrested following a car accident while they were intoxicated. She vanished on the day she was released from Sebastian County Jail.

Since that day, Lori has not been heard from again. She never picked up her last paycheck from Oaks Lodge Nursing Home, where she worked, and did not contact her baby daughter, who is being raised by her mother. Her boyfriend had given her $50 to bail him out of jail, and it is possible she had the money with her when she disappeared.

William Pendergrass

Another case involves 55-year-old William Pendergrass, who was last seen in Rogers, Arkansas, on November 3, 2020. He vanished after leaving the Ranch-O-Tel motel and hasn't been heard from since.

At the time of his disappearance, William lived in Kansas, Oklahoma. He was known to frequent the areas of Rogers, Bentonville, Siloam Springs, Fort Smith, and Ozark, Arkansas.

The Struggle for Attention

One of the significant challenges in addressing the plight of missing adults is the lack of media coverage. While cases involving missing children often receive widespread attention, missing adults do not always garner the same level of concern. This disparity can hinder search efforts and reduce the likelihood of these individuals being found.

The Role of Law Enforcement

Law enforcement agencies in Arkansas work tirelessly to locate missing persons, but they face numerous obstacles. Limited resources, the passage of time, and the complexity of adult lives all complicate investigations. Despite these challenges, dedicated units like the Fort Smith Police Department’s Cold Case Unit continue to pursue leads and apply new technologies in the hope of solving these cases.

The Impact on Families

The families of missing adults endure a unique kind of torment. They live in a state of perpetual uncertainty, torn between hope and despair. Many become advocates, tirelessly working to keep their loved ones’ stories alive and to push for better support systems for families in similar situations.

Community Efforts and Advocacy

Community involvement is crucial in the search for missing adults. Organizations such as the Morgan Nick Foundation, originally established to find missing children, have expanded their focus to include adults. These groups provide resources, support, and advocacy, ensuring that missing persons are not forgotten.Additionally, social media has become a powerful tool in raising awareness.

Families and advocates use platforms like Facebook and Twitter to share information, organize searches, and keep the public engaged. These efforts have led to several breakthroughs, demonstrating the power of community and technology in addressing this crisis.

A Call to Action

The plight of missing adults in Arkansas is a silent crisis that demands our attention. As a community, we must support the efforts of law enforcement, advocate for better resources, and ensure that every missing person’s story is told.

No one should vanish without a trace, and no family should be left without answers. If you have any information about missing persons in Arkansas or wish to support ongoing efforts, please contact your local law enforcement agency.

Every tip, no matter how small, can make a difference.
