Fort Smith, September 1, 2024 – Recent reports indicate an increase in mountain lion sightings across Arkansas and Oklahoma, sparking both intrigue and caution among residents and wildlife officials.
In Arkansas, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has confirmed multiple sightings over the past decade.
Although no acknowledged breeding population exists within the state, these elusive big cats have been spotted near areas like Mammoth Spring in northern Arkansas. Sebastian, Crawford, Franklin, and Logan counties have all had residents capture photos of the elusive big cats within the past six years,
Oklahoma has also seen a notable number of mountain lion sightings. Since 2002, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) has confirmed 77 sightings, with several occurring in recent years. The state recorded confirmed four sightings last year by the end of October.
Wildlife experts believe many of these mountain lions are transient males from western states like Wyoming and South Dakota, searching for new territories.
Despite the excitement surrounding these sightings, officials urge the public to exercise caution and report any encounters to local wildlife authorities.
For those living in or visiting areas where mountain lions have been spotted, it is essential to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines to avoid potential conflicts with these powerful predators.
