Three returned to custody after suspected fentanyl overdoses in Johnson County Detention Center

An incident Tuesday in the Johnson County jail sent three inmates to an area hospital after officials say the trio may have overdosed on the synthetic drug fentanyl and had to be treated with lifesaving methods involving Narcan.

According to a JCSO the men needed an extreme amount of the NARCAN medication, which potentially saved their lives before they were transported to Johnson Regional Hospital in Clarksville.

All three men survived the incident and were returned to the jail where they remain behind bars.

Law enforcement is conducting an investigation to try and determine the source of the drugs but suspects they were smuggled into the jail by an inmate. As of 6 am December 11, a cursory look at the booking information at the Johnson County Detention Center shows no arrest for contraband at the facility.

According to the CDC, 107,375 people in the United States died of drug overdoses and drug poisonings in the 12-month period ending in January 2022. Sixty-seven percent (71,941) of those deaths involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl.
