A suspect linked to a domestic disturbance and aggravated robbery in Fort Smith was fatally shot by Arkansas State Police (ASP) troopers on Friday, May 16, 2025, following a pursuit and armed confrontation near Van Buren.
The incident began around 6:30 a.m. when ASP received reports of a reckless driver near the 7-mile marker on eastbound Interstate 40. Authorities suspected the vehicle was connected to earlier crimes in Fort Smith.
The suspect stopped at the Hilltop Travel Center in Alma and entered the store, prompting a response from ASP troopers and Crawford County deputies.
According to ASP, an altercation ensued when officers confronted the suspect, who produced a handgun and fled. During the pursuit, officers repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect, still armed, turned toward the officers and refused to comply, leading troopers to open fire, fatally striking him.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. The suspect’s body will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the manner and cause of death.
ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting and will submit its findings to the Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney, who will review whether the use of lethal force complied with Arkansas law.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending further investigation.
