Sheriff, former police officer granted continuance in Scott County excessive force case

A motion was granted last week for a continuance in the trial of two Scott County law enforcement officials who were scheduled to go on trial for excessive use of force during a February 2022 arrest,..

According to information filed with Arkansas Court Connect, current Scott County Sheriff Randy Shores and former Waldron police officer Omar Gonzalez were scheduled to start their trial last Tuesday in Scott County Circuit Court.

Shores' attorney filed for the continuance saying he had not had enough time to collect and review all the evidence in the case. Likewise, Gonzalez attorney asked for a continuance because he was scheduled to be in court in another county on the original trial date.

Officials say Gonzalez used excessive force during a traffic stop on US highway 71 and that a suspect was thrown head-first into a vehicle while his handcuffs were behind his back. The investigation showed that Shores witnessed the incident.

Gonzalez resigned from his position with the Walden police force on May 2 of last year.

Shores with charged with two class A misdemeanor counts of being an accomplice to third degree battery, while Gonzalez was charged with three counts of third-degree battery.

The new trial date was sett by Judge Jerry Don Ramey for February 21.
