A career criminal from Russellville will serve more than two decades in federal prison following a major methamphetamine trafficking investigation in Pope County.

Larry Douglas Cossey, 59, was sentenced Monday to 264 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. U.S. District Judge James M. Moody, Jr. also imposed five years of supervised release. Federal parole is not available.

Cossey pleaded guilty in February 2025 after a June 2024 indictment by a grand jury charged him with multiple offenses, including drug trafficking and firearm violations. Federal agents, working with local law enforcement, traced his illegal activity through confidential informant buys and two traffic stops in 2023.

According to court records, Cossey sold methamphetamine to a confidential informant in January 2023. In April, officers stopped him and discovered more than $13,000 in cash, marijuana, THC products, suspected ecstasy pills, and 399 grams of meth concealed in a safe.

A second stop in June uncovered additional meth, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded .380 caliber handgun.

Prosecutors noted that Cossey qualified as a career offender based on prior convictions for drug trafficking and firearm possession, resulting in an enhanced sentence.
