Poteau man headed to prison for ten years after guilty plea on child pornography charges


The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Internet Crimes Against Children annpounced on Tesday that an ongoing investigation has resulted in a former Poteau resident being sentenced to prison.


Stephen Newman , 36. was arrested in November 2020 on one charge of Procuring Obscene Material, which is a felony.


Two years later, on November 22, 2022, Newman appeared in LeFlore County District Court and entered a plea of guilty.


Newman was arrested by the McAlester Police Department without incident in January and officers transported Newman to the Pittsburg County jail. Police said he was arrested back in January less than three hours after the OSBI put out a social media appeal on his whereabouts.


The court sentenced Newman to 20 years in prison with all but the first ten years suspended. Additionally, Newman is required to requester as a sex offender.
