Police officials in Northwest Arkansas say a 20-year-old Dumas man died from injuries sustained in a vehicle/pedestrian accident that occurred Wednesday on i-49 near mile marker 43.
According to a preliminary report by the Arkansas State Police , which was delayed a few days pending notification of next of kin, Wayne Simmons was driving a 2014 Mercedes southbound on i-49 at just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night. He pulled his vehicle to the side of the road and was standing outside of the vehicle on the passenger side.
A 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, driven by an unidentified driver, veered off the roadway to the right and sideswiped the Mercedes. After striking the Mercedes, which impacted Simmons, the Pacifica came to final rest on the roadside facing to the south.
According to that ASP report conditions were cloudy and the roadway was dry at the time of the accident,
Simmons death represents the 336th of the year in a total of 306 accidents involving fatalities.
