The Arkansas State Police has released the names of two Fort Smith men they say were killed in a four vehicle accident that also sent two other individuals to an area hospital on Saturday.
The early morning accident, which occurred at 7:10 am on 1-49 northbound near the 48 mile marker, involved a 2014 Honda Accord, a 2016 Chevrolet Trax, a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado, and a 2008 Nissan Altima that were all traveling north on the roadway.
Freezing rain and ice had caused a pile-up up of the vehicles on the east side of the road, and several individuals had exited their vehicles. Francisco Vallecillo, 28, Carlos Garcia, 31, both of Fort Smith and Kanene Young, 27, of Mobile , Alabama were struck by a vehicle as they stood on the eastern side of the roadway.
Vallencillo and Garcia were pronounced dead at the scene. Young and a fourth person, 24-year-old Kevin Romero of Fort Smith were transported to a local medical facility for treatment of injuries.
The accident occurred at the end of a bridge near the West Fort exit.
