Peddling perp pulls plenty of time after bank blunder, bike ride and stand-off with police

A 42-year-old Fort Smith man who attempted to rob a bank before fleeing on a bicycle and was the subject of a six-hour standoff with police in March found out his fate last week when he was sentenced to ninety-five years to run concurrently with ten years suspended on various charges stemming from the incident.


Charles Abraham Smith Jr. of Fort Smith was originally charged with aggravated robbery, first-degree terroristic threatening, possession of more than 4 ounces of marijuana with the purpose to deliver and being a habitual offender after this flubbed two-wheeled attempt at robbing a First National Bank branch on Midland Boulevard o March 1.


Smith received fifty years for the attempted bank robbery, thirty years for terroritic threatening and fifteen years on the drug charges. All were set to run concurrently.

Smith fled the scene of the crime before barricading himself in an abandoned residence located at 2601 Armour Avenue, where he was later arrested without incident. Police said he was in possession of a firearm during the stand-off at the hpouse, which is located about a mile from crime scene.


Smith was sentenced as a habitual offender stemming from his history of a half-dozen other felony convictions stretching all the way back to 2002 when he received a five-year stretch for drug charges.
