In the small town of Spiro, where high school football is a way of life, Henry Burris emerged as a standout quarterback whose journey took him from local fields to international acclaim as a Canadian Football League Hall of Famer.
Burris’ blend of grit, talent, and charisma crafted a career that continues to inspire athletes in Oklahoma and beyond.
Born on June 4, 1975, in Spiro, Burris grew up in a close-knit community where his athletic gifts shone early. At Spiro High School, he was a multi-sport star, but football was his calling.

His speed, arm strength, and leadership drew college scouts, earning him a scholarship to Temple University in Philadelphia.
Despite Temple’s modest football program, Burris became one of the Owls’ greatest quarterbacks, ranking among the program’s all-time leaders in passing yards and touchdowns.
After graduating in 1997, Burris faced a critical juncture. Undrafted by the NFL, he refused to let his dream fade. Turning north, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League in 1997, launching an 18-year career across four CFL teams: Calgary, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Ottawa Redblacks.
His mastery of the CFL’s fast-paced, wide-open style made him a fan favorite and a dominant force.

Burris’ CFL career was nothing short of legendary. Retiring in 2017, he ranked third all-time in league history with 63,639 passing yards and 373 touchdowns. . He won three Grey Cup championships (1998, 2008, 2016) and earned Grey Cup MVP honors twice (2008, 2016).
His 2016 season with Ottawa was iconic; at 41, having overcome two torn ACLs earlier in his career, Burris led the Redblacks to their first-ever Grey Cup title, cementing his reputation as a clutch performer.
“Henry Burris is a leader, a champion, and a true ambassador for the game,” the Ottawa Redblacks’ official X account declared in 2022, celebrating his induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
The 2022 honor, delayed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, recognized not just his stats but his resilience and impact on the sport.
Off the field, Burris faced challenges that tested his resolve, from injuries to the pressure of proving himself in a foreign league.

His Oklahoma roots kept him grounded. “Spiro taught me hard work and community,” Burris wrote in a 2017 Players’ Tribune essay, reflecting on how his hometown fueled his perseverance.
After retiring, Burris transitioned into coaching and broadcasting, sharing his expertise with new generations. In 2020, he joined the Chicago Bears as part of their Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship during training camp, assisting with quarterback development under head coach Matt Nagy.
Working with players like Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, Burris brought his CFL-honed insights to the NFL, earning praise for his leadership and ability to connect with athletes. This role marked an early milestone in his coaching career.

In 2022, Burris joined the BC Lions as an offensive consultant, mentoring young players. By 2024, he took on a new challenge at Florida A&M University (FAMU) as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, calling plays for key games, including the 2024 Florida Classic against Bethune-Cookman.
In March 2025, Burris was promoted to assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach at FAMU, a role highlighting his growing influence in college football.
FAMU head coach James Colzie III praised Burris’ expertise, stating, “He’s been around the game at the highest levels.”
At 49, Burris continues to shape football’s future while carrying the lessons of Spiro and the CFL.

His 2022 Canadian Football Hall of Fame induction and his current role at FAMU are testaments to a life dedicated to the game.
From Oklahoma’s red dirt to Canada’s gridirons, an NFL coaching stint, and now to the sidelines of college football, Henry Burris’ journey is a testament in talent, tenacity, and triumph.
