Our Arklahoma Heritage: A short-lived Montgomery County federal government research site now lies abandoned

Nestled in a quiet valley between the unincorporated community of Fancy Hill and the slow running waters of the Caddo River in Montgomery County, an eighty-five-foot white dish still faces the sky from a forty-five-foot pedestal. It is the last surviving American earth station of its kind from the first years of geosynchronous satellite communications, a Hughes Aircraft Company research facility that lived only from 1965 to 1969 and then went quiet on private timberland.


The station was never supposed to stand here. Hughes Space Systems Division wanted it beside the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville so company engineers and faculty could share the same problem: how to talk to a satellite parked more than twenty-two thousand miles out. Early Bird, later Intelsat I, had gone up on April 6, 1965. The signal that came back, Hughes men said, held no more energy than a glowworm after that long fall.


An eighty-five-foot paraboloid could gather it only if the ground around the dish stayed electrically still. Fayetteville was not still. Transcontinental microwave towers on the Dallas to St. Louis telephone and television backbone already cut the air. Car ignition noise along the highways would swamp the downlink. A newly planned microwave system threatened interference so severe that a Hughes program manager put it in writing: they could not place the station near the city or the roads.


The university partnership that had sold the idea to Arkansas politicians never recovered after the move.


Montgomery County surfaced in a General Assembly discussion as a hollow with almost no microwave traffic and almost no people. Representative Oren Harris of El Dorado announced the choice on May 8, 1965, a tract about forty miles southwest of Hot Springs, later fenced on a little more than eleven acres near Hopper.


Construction started at once. Talk ran to two million dollars and a hundred jobs. A low- water bridge over the Caddo drowned the haul road with every hard rain and shoved the calendar. Project lead Norman Matlock still told the state the work was seventy percent done and would run by New Year’s Day 1966.

Photographs of the finished reflector appeared in mid-February. On May 30 Hughes bused seventy-five conference delegates from more than thirty countries out of a Little Rock hotel for a soft opening.


The plant was spare. The dish sat on its pedestal. A one-story concrete block control house with a flat Warren truss roof, plate glass on the south face, and steel doors on the west held the computers and cabling. The station could transmit as well as receive. Only one other American facility of that generation was built to do the same work.


The antenna at Andover, Maine, was later dismantled, which is why the Hopper dish is the last of its type still standing.


Early Bird itself had been designed for eighteen months and lasted until 1969, with a brief wake up for Apollo 11. Intelsat was already moving to heavier satellites and a web of commercial earth stations.


Hughes’s experimental question, how to work a synchronous bird from the ground, had an answer. Staffing a remote Arkansas pad after the first generation of hardware had done its job made no commercial sense. The wiring came off the reflector. The computers left the block building. The land went private.


Because the fence said Hughes and then the woods went quiet, rumors grew. For years, people on listservs treated the dish as folklore, a thing that might not be real until the landowner opened the gate for preservation staff. Other talk made it a secret listening post or a Cold War ear Hughes did not want named.


The company’s later classified reconnaissance and relay satellites for the government made those stories easy to believe.


The paper trail does not support them. Isolation was required because the signal was vanishingly weak, not because the work was hidden. No public record has given the site a formal military classification. The 2017 National Register listing redacted the exact coordinates, ordinary practice on private historic ground, and that silence only fed the old stories.


The dish is still there, leaking roof on the control house, private timber around it, a four-year experiment left in the valley because four years was all the first age of commercial space communications needed from a quiet hollow on the Caddo.
