Ottawa County man arrested on multiple sex offender violations near school zone

A 45-year-old man identified as Joseph Wevers was arrested late Tuesday night in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, facing a series of charges related to violations of sex offender restrictions and other offenses.


Wevers was booked at 10:10 p.m. on July 15 and is currently held under Inmate ID 78177 at the Ottawa County Jail. According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, the charges include:


  • Failure to Register as a Sex Offender

  • Entering a Designated Safety Zone Around a School

  • Residing Within 2,000 Feet of a School

  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

  • Obstructing an Officer

  • Public Intoxication


Authorities say Wevers was found in violation of Oklahoma’s strict sex offender residency laws, which prohibit registered offenders from living or loitering near school zones. The arrest occurred during a routine patrol when officers reportedly observed suspicious behavior near a school perimeter in Miami, Ottawa County.


Upon further investigation, officers discovered Wevers was not in compliance with mandatory registration requirements and was allegedly under the influence at the time of arrest. He also reportedly resisted officers during the encounter.


The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office emphasized that the arrest underscores their commitment to enforcing public safety laws, particularly those protecting children and school zones.


Wevers remains iond in ther Ottawa County Detention Center. . No bond information has been released at this time.
