The second vehicle/pedestrian accident on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fayetteville within 48 hours took the life of a 66-year-old Fayetteville man on Monday.

The accident, which occurred at 6:09 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and South Hollywood Avenue, also sent a 26-year-old Fayetteville woman to the hospital with injuries.

According to a preliminary report posted on the Arkansas Department of Public safety website, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department say that 66-year-old Gregory Joseph Dana was crossing MLK Junior Boulevard approximately 600 feet from South Hollywood Avenue.

Dana was walking south from 2222 West Martin Luther King Boulevard and attempted to cross the road where there was no crosswalk or intersection. Emily Juanitta Waterman, 26, of Fayetteville dashed into traffic in attempt to stop Dana before he was hit by a 2010 westbound Ford Expedition.

Dana was struck by the front of the vehicle while Waterman was hit by the front passenger side.

Waterman was taken to the Washington Regional Medical Center with unspecified injuries. Dana was declared dead at the scene and taken to the Washington County Coroner's morgue.

Officer Matthew Camilos of the Fayetteville Police Department worked the accident and said the weather was rainy and the road was wet at the time of the incident.
