Man convicted of Rape in 2001 arrested in Bonanza for failure to register as sex offender

A Bonanza man remained behind bars on Thursday after his Wednesday arrest by the Bonanza Police Department facing charges for fleeing by vehicle, assault on a family or household member and for failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements, according to information from the Sebastian County Detention Center.

Michael Edward Leach, 61, whose last known address was in the 700 block of Highway 45 in Bonanza remained locked-up facing $11,750 in legally sufficient bonds awaiting his first appearance in District Court.

Leach was booked into the SCDC at 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

In 2001, Leach negotiated a plea deal in Crawford County on a rape charge and received 20 years in prison with all but five of those years suspended. He was also required to register as a sex offender by the courts.

In the year prior to that conviction, Leach also picked up a DWI in Crawford County for which he served just one day in jail.

According to SCDC booking information, Leach is set for a September 21 court appearance to answer to the three new charges.
