A Louisiana man was sentenced to 35 years in prison last week in Sequoyah County in a case involving the shooting of two men in 2021 in an incident on Interstate 40.
Court officials say Lee Breon King of Bastrop, Louisiana received the sentence in Sequoyah County Circuit Court in Sallisaw for the shooting of John Riggs and Jake Myers during the random incident in the summer of 2021.
Riggs and Myers stopped to help King, who was walking near a disabled vehicle on the side of the road. The man offered King a ride to get gas for his vehicle and police were alerted shortly after that two men had been located shot beside the interstate.
Rigs received multiple gunshot wounds in his torso and Mars had been shot in the face.
King was arrested in Dallas after a multi-operation manhunt following the shootings
District 27 prosecutor Jim Thorp said in a press release "the defendant's violent and pointless actions cause these two men a lot of needless suffering,"
According to Thorp, both men had to undergo multiple surgeries following the shooting.
King was convicted on two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and was given an additional 10 years on the counts of maiming and attempted robbery. Officials said all sentences will run concurrently and King must serve at least 85% of his sentence before being considered for parole.
Prior to the shooting, king had previous arrests in Galveston County Texas on charges of terroristic threatening, as wel as robbery, numerous criminal trespassing violations, and various other infractions mostly in and around Dallas.
