Ill-fated photo opportunity results in Crawford County man's death after being struck by train Saturday night

A train struck a Crawford County man on the railroad bridge crossing the Arkansas Rover Saturday near Lee Creek Park, resulting in his death and two injuries.

According to law enforcement, three individuals were shooting pictures on the railroad bridge on Saturday night when the train crossed the bridge and struck all three, throwing the deceased individual into the Arkansas River.

Officials have not released the name of the victim, but Today in Fort Smith was notified of his identity earlier today by a family friend. We are withholding that information pending notification of his next of kin.

The two injured parties, who only had minor injuries, told officials they were on the bridge in order to take photographs and were unable to clear the tracks before being struck by the train.

The man's body was located shortly after the incident in the water by the Fort Smith Fire Department Dive Team with assistance from the Crawford County Sheriff's Office.
