Fort Smith Police arrest homeless man in theft of industrial electrical coil valued at over $7000

Fort Smith Police have arrested 46-year-old William John McCoy in connection with the theft of two industrial water-cooling coils, valued at nearly $7,000, from a business in the 3900 block of Wheeler Avenue.


The incident occurred in the early hours of June 24.


Following an investigation, detectives identified the suspect vehicle and apprehended McCoy without incident on Thursday, June 26. He now faces charges of Commercial Burglary and Theft of Property.


According to jail records, he is listed as homeless and has a history of prior arrests in Sebastian County.


. No bond has been set at this time.


McCoy’s record for previous arrests in Fort Smith includes charges for:

  • Burglary – Commercial Felony (Feb 2024)

  • Possession of Controlled Substance – Schedule I/II Felony <2g

  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Felony

  • Failure to Appear – Class C Felony (July 2024)


He has been booked into the Sebastian County facility multiple times over the past year, with prior arrests in February and October 2024.


The investigation into the Wheeler Avenue theft remains ongoing. Authorities may release additional information as it becomes availab
