Fort Smith man killed when work crew struck by vehicle on I540 northbound



The Arkansas State Police has identified the man who was struck and killed while working with a mowing crew along I540 on Monday.


In a story you were first alerted to by Today in Fort Smith, 26-year-old Moises Felipe Cruz died and three other men were injured when a 2006 Lincoln LS traveling northbound on the interstate swerved left to avoid rear-ending a vehicle, crashed through the steel cable barrier and struck the crew in the median.


Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. Jesus Cruz-Garcia , 21, Juan Carlos Morales, 26, and Geraldo Morales Felipe, 45, were all transported to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith and treated for unspecified injuries.


The accident occurred at 4.5 mile marker area of the interstate between the Kelley Highway exit and the Arkansas River Bridge to Crawford County at 4:46 pm during peak traffic conditions for the afternoon home commute for many workers.


Trooper Ronald Elkins who investigated the crash, noted clear conditions and dry pavement at the time of the accident.
