Disappearance and homicide of Huntsville woman results in deputy's resignation, community outrage

Writer: Dennis McCaslinDennis McCaslin

The tragic case of Taylor Barksdale, a 30-year-old woman from Huntsville, has sparked outrage across the Internet as new details reveal severe failures in the handling of her disappearance and murder investigation.

Advocates and community members are demanding answers and accountability after a series of systemic missteps that may have cost Taylor her life.

Taylor Barksdale was reported missing in July 2024, yet there are no known records of her case being entered into any missing persons database. No public alerts were issued, and her name remains absent from NamUs, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

These alarming oversights have left her family and community questioning why her case was not prioritized.

“Every missing person deserves to be searched for. Every life matters,” a family advocate stated.

Then came a chilling call on August 5. A resident of Kingstonreported hearing horrifying screams--so disturbing that it was described as the sound of a woman being tortured. The caller did what any responsible citizen would do: they dialed 911.

The on-duty deputy at the time, Deputy Hassell, was believed to have been dispatched. However, in a shocking revelation, reports now confirm that Hassell never responded to the distress call.

Taylor’s remains were discovered weeks later, on September 9. By then, critical evidence had been lost to the elements.

Sheriff Ronnie Boyd acknowledged that a deputy failed to respond to a 911 call on August 5, 2024, which could have potentially saved Taylor's life. Just days after her body was found, Deputy Hassell resigned. His inaction on the night of August 5 remains an infuriating and heartbreaking mystery.

Sheriff Boyd emphasized that his office is working hard to uncover the full truth and bring justice to Taylor's family. He also mentioned that the sheriff's office is currently understaffed, which has added to the challenges they face.

Had authorities acted swiftly and decisively, could Taylor still be alive today? The lack of urgency in her search, the failure to respond to the 911 call, and the slow recognition of her case as a homicide have fueled suspicions of negligence--or worse.

The people of Fort Smith and beyond are demanding justice for Taylor Barksdale. Law enforcement agencies are under pressure to provide answers, and advocacy groups are calling for increased accountability in handling missing persons cases.

If you have any information about Taylor’s case, please come forward. She deserves to be more than a forgotten name.
