A man was shot at a Mayes County motel on Sunday night, marking Pryor's first murder of the year, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

According to Pryor Police, the gunman--later identified as James Leroy Jackson--turned himself in and told officers during an interview that he didn't even know the victim of the murder.

An affidavit states that Pryor police were called in response to a shooting report on Sunday at 9:39 p.m. When police arrived at Econo Lodge Motel along Highway 69, they discovered a man--later identified as Aaron Gonzalez--had been shot, according to Pryor Police Chief Jeremy Cantrell.

Gonzalez, a Mexican national who was staying at a motel with a friend while on business in the area, was shot once in the neck and once in the shoulder by Jackson, according to the police.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) was contacted by Pryor police for assistance with the crime scene.

According to the affidavit, OSBI agents were informed by first responders at the motel that a grey truck with a camper shell had departed the parking lot following the shooting.

Jackson allegedly drove away before they arrived, but he later called the police to bring himself in and refused to give a reason for shooting Gonzalez.

Jackson is currently being held in the Mayes County Jail on a first-degree murder charge and for possession of firearms by a convicted felon.
