Cold Case Files: Socorro Moran-Mendoza was killed and dumped in rural Benton County in 1997

On the morning of February 1, 1997, an animal trapper conducting routine checks in a wooded ravine near Gann Ridge Road in Benton County discovered a suitcase partially buried beside a creek.

Inside was the body of Socorro Moran-Mendoza, a 42-year-old Hispanic woman. She had been strangled and beaten, and her death was classified as a homicide.

Socorro had recently been reported missing in Mexico by her boyfriend. The suitcase was found north of Pea Ridge National Military Park, in a remote area with limited foot traffic. The Benton County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Arkansas State Police the same day, initiating a joint investigation.

Despite efforts to gather evidence and locate witnesses, the case yielded few leads. No forensic breakthroughs were reported, and no suspects were identified. Over time, the investigation stalled, and the case became one of several unsolved homicides in the state.

Little is publicly known about Socorro’s background beyond her age, ethnicity, and gender. Her connection to Mexico suggests she may have been living or traveling in the United States at the time of her death. Whether she was alone or accompanied, and the circumstances leading to her death, remain unclear.\\

The case has received limited public attention. A 2010 article in the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette listed it among Benton County’s unresolved murder cases from the 1980s and 1990s. Online forums have occasionally discussed the case, but no new information has emerged.
