Citizens coalition in Franklin County pushes back against mocking email concerning proposed prison lands

The following is a press release from the Franklin County River Valley Coalition:

Franklin County, AR – The Franklin County and River Valley Coalition (FCRVC) expresses deep disappointment and concern over recent actions by Jonathan Duran, Deputy Director of the Arkansas GIS Office, in his email exchange with Shelby Johnson, Arkansas State Geographic Information Officer.

In his email, Duran compared the citizens of Franklin County and the River Valley to cartoon characters from South Park, further adding the statement “they took our land.”

His email was intended to mock and belittle the hardworking, law-abiding citizens Duran serves, undermining the integrity of public service in Arkansas.

Such a comparison is a gross disrespect to the people he represents. Additionally, the fact that Duran sent the inappropriate video to Johnson suggests that he expected Johnson to view the video in a humorous light.

Duran’s behavior is not only offensive but also reveals a troubling lack of professionalism and respect for the very people he represents. Public officials, especially those in positions of influence, must adhere to the highest standards of fairness, respect, and accountability.

Such actions harm those directly affected and erode the trust the public places in its leaders.

While some may call for Duran’s removal from the specific prison site project, the Franklin County and River Valley Coalition believes this issue extends far beyond that.

A simple apology or reassignment will not suffice. Duran’s behavior demands more decisive action: the complete removal of Jonathan Duran from his position. We call on Governor Sarah Sanders to take immediate action to uphold the values of professionalism, respect, and fairness within Arkansas’ leadership.

The people of Franklin County and the River Valley deserve public servants who treat them with dignity and respect. We stand together united in demanding accountability and a government that works for all, not against them.
