Nestled in the small town of Gentry in Benton County, the Little Debbie factory stands as both a local treasure and a hub of economic activity.
Known for producing some of the most beloved snack cakes in America, including Oatmeal Creme Pies, Swiss Rolls, and Honey Buns, the factory has become an essential part of Gentry’s identity and economy.
In 1960, McKee Baking Company pioneered the “family pack,” a family sized carton of 12 or more cellophane-wrapped cakes. Individually sold, 12 cakes would sell for a total of 60¢. The price of the new 12-count family pack carton was 49¢.
By 1982, Little Debbie Snacks, after being named the "Official Snack Cake of the 1982 World's Fair", were available at retailers nationwide.
Built in 1982 to help meet demand, the Gentry manufacturing facility has helped McKee Foods serve the western United States and Mexico.
Since its establishment, the factory has employed hundreds of local residents, providing stable jobs and boosting the town's economy. Little Debbie, a brand of McKee Foods, chose Gentry for its strategic location in Northwest Arkansas, allowing the company to distribute its products efficiently across the country.
"Working at the Little Debbie plant has been a great opportunity for me and my family," says a long time employee. "It’s more than just a job—there’s a real sense of community here. We’re all proud to be part of something that brings joy to so many people."
The factory’s presence in Gentry has also helped shape the town's development, with many local businesses benefiting from the increased traffic and employment. Small stores, restaurants, and other services have sprung up around the plant, offering amenities to workers and visitors alike.
It’s a symbiotic relationship that has helped keep Gentry thriving in a competitive economy.
Beyond the economic impact, the Little Debbie factory is a point of pride for the community.
Every year, the plant hosts a variety of events, from employee appreciation days to open house tours, giving locals a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite snack cakes are made.
For many families, these events are a tradition, and the factory's role in the community goes far beyond its industrial function.
In addition, the company makes charitable donations to numerous pantries and food banks, spreading equal amounts of goodwill and great tasting snacks to those fortunate.
For consumers, a dozen delicious snack cakes in one box,, even at today's prices, are still considered a steal. There is even a Little Debbie Company Store located at 105 S Highway 59 in Gentry with prices that are usually below retail.
The facility employs more than 1,500 people. The Gentry plant is active in the community, supporting United Way and local schools through donations of time, money and products.
"It’s amazing to think that the snacks we grew up with are made right here in Gentry," said one local resident. "The factory is part of the town’s story, and we’re proud to call it ours."
As Little Debbie continues to be a staple in households across America, the Gentry plant plays a key role in keeping the sweet treats on store shelves. With a focus on quality,
efficiency, and community, the factory remains a beacon of success in a small Arkansas town that takes pride in every bite.
Whether you’re a fan of the iconic Zebra Cakes or the seasonal Christmas Tree Cakes, there’s a good chance your favorite snack came from this small but mighty factory in Gentry, Arkansas.
