ASP release details on major crash on I-40 that killed two from Tennessee

The Arkansas State Police released details on Thursday about a fatal accident on I-40 involving five tractor-trailer rigs that took the life if a pair of drivers from Tennessee.

Accirding to the ASP report, traffic was backed up on the interstate due to a wreck that occurred several miles farther down the road way. Three International trucks--a 2018, 2017 and 2009 --along with a 2015 Volvo were idling in the outside lane when a westbound 2020 Freightliner crashed into the 2017 International and sideswiped the left front of the 2009 International

That started a chain reaction, with the Freightliner hitting the Volvo and sending it into the back of the 2018 International. The Freightliner and Volvo then exited the roadway and caught fire.

Mary D. Masi, 59, of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee--the driver of the Freightliner--and her passenger, 59-year-old Donald C. Swofford of Waynesboro, Tennessee both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Darrel A, Miller, 56, of Ward was the driver of the 2018 International and he was taken to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The deaths of the two Tennessee residents were the 439th and 440th of the year on Arkansas roadways.
