Accident in rural Newton County proves fatal to Wynnewood, Oklahoma man

An eighty-three-year-old Wynnewood, Ok. man died Saturday afternoon in a crash on Arkansas Highway 74 in the rural community of Ponca in Newton County.

According to the Arkansas State Police, Royce Lee Freeman was killed in the crash at just after 1:30 p.m Saturday when the 1965 Cushman scooter he was driving eastbound on Arkansas 74 failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road. Vehicle and rider slammeed into a guard rail on the right shoulder and Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to ASP trooper Michael Valentin the weather was cloudy and road conditions were dry at the time of the accident.

Freeman was the 286th person killed on Arkansas roadways in 2022.
